Issue
Mediasite playback on Linux platforms is supported in a limited capacity. With Mediasite 7.0.28 and earlier, only on-demand playback is supported. Mediasite 7.0.30 and later support both live and on-demand playback on Linux. Installation of additional software or codecs may be necessary.
Solution
Mediasite 7.0.30 and later
Mediasite supports on-demand and live presentation playback on Linux. The majority of testing was done against Ubuntu, but other Linux distributions should work as well. In order to play back Mediasite content we recommend the following:
- Chrome or Firefox browser.
- VLC Media Player (to install H.264 codecs)
Mediasite 7.0.28 and earlier
Mediasite supports on-demand presentation playback of MP4 content on Linux. Linux users may be required to install the necessary codecs needed to playback H.264 content. Additionally, Linux users will also require an appropriate browser that can use the H.264 codecs with the HTML5 media element. Installation of necessary browsers, support software and video codecs varies per Linux distribution.
Sonic Foundry has tested, on-demand presentation play back with H.264 content in MP4 format with the Chromium web browser and FFmpeg plugin. We used the following installation procedures to set up the Linux System for testing:
- openSUSE: Follow this installation guide for the necessary software and codecs. You will also need to install the chromium-ffmpeg plugin.
- Ubuntu: Install the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package.
